  • During the 1960s California was hit with mass immigration from left thinking liberals. The state has never recovered.
  • Because more than a hundred years ago, the people who really didn't like other people very much started migrating west. As others migrated west, they picked up and moved farther west. Eventually, they ran into an ocean and piled up there. Additionally, a lot of get-rich-quick types piled up out there during the gold rush. And then, as Medwin pointed out, the hippies piled up out there in the sixties. So the state sort of got overwhelmed by different groups of people who thought differently than the majority during various migrations when they all hit an ocean.
  • I am from California and have never lived elsewhere, so can you explain these "American values" that I know nothing about.
  • Exactly which American values are you talking about? The constitution? Native-American values? African-American values? Latino-American values? Arab-American values? Judeo-Christian values?.........:)
  • California is part of America, therefore the values held by Californians are American. Can we really pretend that huge chunks of America aren't really American? Let's do the numbers: California in 2007: population 36,553,215 The combined populations of Alabama, South Carolina, Louisiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Iowa, Mississippi, Arkansas, Utah, West Virginia, Nebraska, Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota in 2007: 34,964,892 How exactly does a state with an order of magnitude more Americans in it than the states listed not qualify as American? Nearly 100 million people live in the urban and liberal states of California, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennslyvania. Are those people not Americans? Do those people not live in the "real" America? Really, what you're calling "American values" are in fact YOUR values that you'd like to impose on your fellow Americans. The people who don't share those values do not somehow lose their citizenship or their vote, however much you might wish otherwise.
  • They voted Reagan and Swartzenegger!
  • Look California is a big State, and there's alot of people here from different backgrounds. American values are hard to come by, when over 90 plus % is Hispanic, least out here. There are places where you can barely see any English signed businesses...IN AMERICA. English speaking people are being "guided" to learn another language-Spanish, if you want to get by in California. Its not mandatory, but it will make your life easier. Imagine going to another country, and expecting the people there, having to learn to adopt to your native tongue. Usually, one has to learn the language of the people; our current times are different. When people came to Ellis Island years ago, one of the first things they wanted to do was learn English, if they didnt know it. Not knowing the common language spoken can hinder a person. People have values, but they may not be the same as yours...thats all. Maybe something gets lost in translations too?
  • Perhaps the influence of Hollyweird, the king of all style and no substance.
  • Waiting for that list of American values? Or should we read your profile and assume that all of yor values are the same as we shpuld all hold?
  • Hey Cowboys. It's the Kool-aid.... At least we passed prop 8....which will undoubtedly be over turned by a judge who thinks he knows what is better than the voters
  • Just dumb luck.. Haight Ashbury in the 60's was the starting point I think..."If you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair"...and they did. They came here to escape perceived oppressions, which then opened the door to other groups who wanted "freedoms" to do whatever they wanted. they heard California is the place they ought to be, so they loaded up the truck.....Once these groups gained power they started changing policy and those already in power caved to the demands of every group that wanted attention in fear of being labeled as oppressor's...
