Most likely you had a 'chemical pregnancy'. 'Chemical pregnancy' is a pretty name that disguises what it really is - a miscarriage. It is estimated that 80% of first time pregnancies end in miscarriage or are 'chemical pregnancies'. Most often the woman reports a heavier than usual flow for the first cycle out from the date of conception. In such cases a pregnancy test reveals high levels of HCG while no fetus is located in the womb. The estimate of 80% is just that an estimate since most women do not report a heavy period nor do they get tested for pregnancy - the research is usually Q&A form where the questions have revealed that many women who have unprotected sex have at least one heavy or abnormal flow period, sometimes after a late or missed period, having some of the symptoms of early pregnancy then later not being pregnant at all.
