The largest rats in the world are the African giant pouched rats. In general, they have a mass of 1 to 1.47 kg (2.2 to 3.23 lbs), and grow to a length of 65 to 91 cm (25.39 to 35.83 in).

Most people are familiar with Norway rats; they generally weigh between 10 and 18 ounces and can grow up to 18 inches (a 2-ft. Norway rat, or domestic rat, would be a monster!). The biggest Norway rat ever caught in a city -- or at least the biggest on record -- was a 2.4 pound giant, caught by Brian Plummer in London.

The word "rat" has no meaning in science. Is a woodchuck a large rat? a beaver? There are many unrelated rodents from different families called rats in different parts of the world. The largest rodent is the Capybara (over 100 pounds).

The biggest rat I know of (in terms of common or garden rat) is 1300 grams or 3 pounds in weight. I currently have a couple of two pounders, and the longest is a couple of feet long (including tail). Some of the more exotic rat species however can grow to several feet in length.

The biggest rat I've seen personally was almost a foot long, not counting the tail. He was the father of my (much smaller) pet rat Lily. Wild rats don't get nearly as big as tame ones, from what I hear, and males are usually larger than females.

Many years ago i read that the largest rat was the 'cummings clouded rat'. Supposedly it had a half metre body and half a metre tail. I have since looked for it online and have found nothing. But there is an animal called the cloud rat, from the philippines whcih does match the description of the 'cummings clouded rat'; a half metre body and half metre tail.

in manila i have seen rats as big as a dog. i doubt there is anything bigger. go see for yourself. there isnt much science about it since philippine research is poorly done. they are real rats. just nobody would study them. those rats eat cats.

OK just watched a program about giant rats and they said the largest is the Norway up to only one and a half pounds. never mentioned the African Pouched which sounds like a marsupial? you all have huge ones though! we have ground squirrels and desert chipmunks here in Las Vegas, no rats.

the reason why the program shows norway as the biggest rat is because nobody would go down the manila sewers to study rats. go do it. you will be the first. if you get out alive that is.
