hamster not as much up keep needed but there basically the same thing so either/or doesnt really matter.

Either, but be sure you buy a baby about 6 weeks old, that way it will be of an age to leave its mother but not too old to have begun to trust humans-don't personally like guinea pigs but have raised hamsters for many years, baby hamsters are so cute and so much fun! Would advise you to start with a teddy bear hamster, they are quite good natured and calm, adjust to humans very well

I've never been bitten by a guinea pig but almost always by hamsters. I'd go with the guinea pig, better (I mean longer) lifespan. Don't forget to give it vit C daily.

I like guinea pigs better and find they learn to interact with people better and they don't bite like some hamsters do. I like the squeals and whistling of them too. They do require more careful dietary care but it's not a hassle, just lots of fresh veggies and fruit. And one good thing is that it is very hard to 'lose' a guinea pig like often happens when a hamster gets out lol!!!! Often, just opening the refrigerator door veggie bin is enough to have your piggy come whistling to you:-)

i would suggest something more like a dwarf rabbit or a ferret. dwarf bunnies stay small and are much more people interactive then the cowardly Guinea pig. and ferrets are like half rabbit and half cat.
