  • Philosophers usually use the term "rationalist" to mean someone who trusts reason more than the senses. Parmenides is quite explicit in his view that our senses cannot be trusted. According to him, even though our senses indicate that the world is in constant flux, reason tells us that change is impossible. So, for him, empirical evidence is deceptive; reason is reliable. That is pretty much what we mean by calling someone a rationalist.
