  • Automatic windows are operated by a servo motor attached to a metal or plastic wheel with a rubber belt around it. The belt probably broke and you are hearing the bare wheel scraping on the glass without any traction. It could be expensive to fix, depending on where you go, because the whole door has to be taken apart. Get estimates from a couple of places (including an independent shop and also a dealer), and decide then.
  • The crunching sound is most likely a loose cable on the dual cable pulley system used on 2002 Ford Explorers. The cable that pulls from the bottom of the door has most likely broken loose as the window is still in the up position. Not sure what a mechanic would charge, but the pulley system is difficult to access.
  • I have the same problem, except my window will not roll up.
