It isnt necessary to bring anything, you wont look like a beggar, most people dont bring anything. I do, however, I love to cook. Bring a bottle of wine or an appetizer if you fell like contributing, otherwise, go and relax and enjoy yourself. :-)

The simple solution is to bring something for the house. A gift for the host family to thank them for inviting you and your family. Not necessarily meaning "You don't make enough".

I'd bring something simple or small, like a bottle of wine or something. I was brought up never go to someone elses house empty handed. Maybe take a salad?

Two things - firstly if you are specifically told not to get anything - don't! Secondly - no you wont look like a sponge! You didnt come uninvited! You were asked to come and asked not to get anything - it doesnt get any simpler than that! If you simply cant come empty handed - get a house gift like flowers or a dvd

Do not bring food. Bringing a hostess gift is a different matter. This would be along the lines of a box of nice, not cheap, candy; flowers, a bottle of wine, etc.
