The color you see right now is not the way it will stay. The sooner you wash your hair, the more you can make the color fade.
How much damage you would do depends on your hair type, and what chemicals you used. Going darker is a bit gentler than going lighter.
Either way... give it a few days to see how the color 'settles' before you decide.
I do it all the time. I recolor and put a good conditioner on it and I'm not bald yet :)
If you just colored your hair for the first time, and dye it again within 48 hours, you will damage it a lot, but it won't all fall out. I suggest that you use really cheap shampoo and conditioner to wash your hair everyday and it will go towards your natural hair color (darker or lighter) quite a bit after a week or so. The dye will fade. After that it normally looks a ton better, but if you are still unsatisfied, you can dye your hair again, just don't dye it too much at once because you are damaging your hair a lot.
If it helps, I had a friend that dyed her hair three times within 2 days. It damaged her hair a lot, but it didnt all fall out.
