Wow. I've been waiting for this question. But my answer is going to throw you cause the song is not so familiar to most. On a Scorpions album released in 1976, There was a song called "Your Light" on Taken by Force. It was the last album that Ulrich Rolph played lead guitar on, and he did not tour for it, so never played it again. The solo at the end of the song, is to this day, my all time favorite. It still sends chills up my spine. Check it out. I can't leave this here too long though. http://www.safewebtrade.com/cansafeweb/Your%20Light.mp3

I really like Slash's solo in November Rain.
-
Carlos Santana on "Black Magic Woman", or Stevie Ray Vaughan on "Texas Flood", well, that may fall into the blues thing, but, oh, well.
-
Jimi Hendrix - Star Spangled Banner (performed 1969 @ woodstock -- yow!!!) What would the guitar solo be if Jimi hadn't played like this???
-
I like (not in any particular order) Carlos Santana for "Black Magic Woman," Neal Schon for "Who's Crying Now," and David Gilmour for "Comfortably Numb." Also "Hotel California" but I'm not sure who was the guitarist (was it Henley or Walsh or who??).

Awhile ago, either a radio station or one of the guitar magazines ran an article on the top 25 guitar solos of all time. And, of course, there were still complaints by people who thought their favorite was omitted. Face it, we all like different things. I guess if you got a hundred professional guitarists together, they could evaluate based on technique (speed, hammers, slides, bends, tapping, etc). But style is definitely a personal thing.

3 way tie... Stairway to Heaven by Jimmy Page (Led Zepelin) Freebird by by Gary Rossington (Lynard Skynard..I love Skynard) Eruption by Eddie Van Halen (what can I say I graduated High School in 1979) All along the Watchtower by Hendrix would be right up there too...and Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple...oh and of course Layla by Clapton..

I think Clapton does it best "Layla" Cream "White Room" "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" but done 2003 by Clapton I think it was 2003 Clapton got together with some of the best musicians and put together a memorial for George Harrison's death, fitting in all seeing as he stole Harrison's wife (Pattie Boyd). Clapton did a few Harrison songs; "Something" this song starts with Paul McCartney on the Yukalaly(spelling), what a conversion when Clapton comes in with the guitar, but by far the best song there, and my favorite of all time "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." At the end Clapton has a solo in which the guitar sounds very mornfull or crying you could say. Clapton makes guitar cry! Either way Eric Clapton ROCKS!!!

Too many to choose from. Really depends on the mood. 5 off the top of my head that I don't think others have mentioned... (and my definition of rock is pretty broad, I don't like classifying music too much) Satch Boogie - Joe Satriani Paranoid Android - Radiohead Cowboys From Hell - Pantera I am the Resurrection - Stone Roses Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen I tried to avoid the obvious ones (not to say I don't like them but wanted to suggest some others). And just as an aside there's nowt wrong with a good guitar cadenza, I enjoy seeing/hearing someone that can play well. Technique isn't fashionable at the moment but neh... I have never followed fashion :)

I'd have to go through a treasure trove of live Prince recordings, but I'm pretty sure he'd be in the top 5.
