Can my dog die from drinking to much water at one time?

I'm not sure if he could die but he might get sick and throw it all up if he's drinking too fast. Has he been sick? Some dogs tend to drink a lot of water when they are sick or on certain medications. If he keeps drinking more than he normally would I would have him checked by the vet.

Sure... any animal can. But he won't... he'll instinctively know when to stop. It takes a lot of water, and since dogs don't compete in ridiculous competitions like "Hold your wee for a wii", he has no reason to drink a fatal amount of water.

A child has died from it so I assume a dog would too.

Sure could. I'll bet it won't happen. If your concern is a dog that has changed it's drinking habits so that it is consuming a lot more than usual I would make a trip to the vet as this can be symptomatic of a couple different things. If this has been ongoing and the normal mode I would not be concerened. My two dogs have completly different water drinking habits.

Yes, any animal can, especially if they are overheated and drink lots of cold water.

If there has been an abrupt change in your dog's water consumption, please call your vet right away. If it is what he normally drinks, don't worry about it.
