Scanning would be the easiest and if you own your own scanner it is the cheapest route as well. For the slides, you will probably need to purchase a negative/slide scanner to get the optimum results.
If you aren't concerned with the price of converting your pictures and slides into CDs then you can probably find a photoshop in your area that will scan the pictures and slides for you. From what I remember from the time I worked at a photolab, that service was one of the highest priced services we offered.
How long have you got to LIVE !..give up..let someone do it for you..Tried that..No good..dont sleep..dont eat....dont do it.
Please be aware that when you transfer one medium to another (updated) one you must not discard the old. As technology advance, the move from old to new changes. We had some 8 MM movies transferred to VCR, and now there are no VCR machines left to play them on. Thank goodness we kept the old films, and projector as well.
