You can get free antivirus software from www.grisoft.com/free It is called AVG Antivirus free edition. I don't know how it might handle viruses already there, but it is not bad at general protection.

Spybot SD is great

Spyware removal software like Spybot SD will NOT remove a trojan or worm. Installing anti-virus on a computer that is already infected may not work either (your mileage may vary). If you know the name of the trojan or worm that is infecting your system, search online for a removal tool that targets that particular infection. Companies like McAfee and Symantec typically make removal tools available for stubborn infections. For what it's worth, once you eradicate the trojan, I recommend AVG also. [update] I stand corrected - 'some' anti-spyware programs now have the ability to remove 'some' trojans and worms. Not viruses. But I would not recommend depending solely on this type of software to protect you from malware. Get some A-V too.

Once you get trojans or worms, the only way you can be sure of removing everything is by backing up your documents, pictures, music, and everything else you want to keep on a flash drive, and format the hard drive followed by a clean install of the operating system and all the other programs and documents. Install a good antivirus like NOD32 or AVG and update on a regular basis. Trojans and worms are hard to remove, they hide in several ways.

I use Avast ome free edition. It works amazingly, updates like twice a week and has a resident scanner which runs all the time, but has seprate parts to it, so one part for e-mail. one for internet, one for P2P etc... I strongly recommend it. Also as someone said above, SpyBot search and destroy is very very good and quick.

Norton, one care live give you a 90 day trial. But honestly, there is no good software available you can download for free.There is always a ending period.

Also, I personally use MSN Bit Defender, Lavasoft's FREE AdAware, FREE Grisoft's Antispyware & regularly go On-Line for house call A.V. for good measure. Using multi-layer defence may resemble fort Knox but so far so good. No bad surprise.

Go to a friend's PC and ask him nicely if you can use it for a couple of hours. Get online on it, search for trial antivirus (Kaspersky, BitDefender, Norton, Mcaffe, NOD32, etc), download and install it; after complete installation shut down the pc and get your hard disk and plug it in your friend's pc and start the disinfection, it should work like a charm :). One more thing , u may need to reinstall the operating system afterwards on your hard-drive , if the worm/virus/trojan messed with it and u see some clear problems
