Hmm... I think it would have to be an asexual gender. It would have some resemblance to male or female but would not need either to reproduce.

A third gender would be a humunculus. This would have no sexual organs and would basically have the body of an untoned man. Facialy it would look like an angrodinous woman. It would reproduce asexualy (cellular-division).

Gender is an idea of the society, in some societies, a third gender already exists, such as the berdache in Native American culture or hijras/hijdas in India...http://commentatorno1-eunuchsinmumbai.buzznet.com/user/photos/?id=3545715

There is, its called asexual, sea urchins are one example.. they have been around for many millions of years, its actually a very economical way to reproduce. The one draw back is there isnt much variation in the genes, and that makes it harder to adapt to enviromental changes.
-
I would think the third gender would be the gateway that connects the original two genders(male and female) when it comes to reproduction process and ritual as seen in some movie on TV ages ago.

(A) Third Gender is not just a "Social concept". Actually, its the Western concept of Sexual Orientation which is not only socially engineered but totally flawed and manipulative. Third Gender is a very real biological Phenomenon. It's only that the Western society, where Christianity persecuted and de-recognised the third gender long ago, and its Science doesn't recognise Third Gender as "natural" or "biological" and instead considers members of the third gender as useless, abnormal people. One reason for this is of course the Western society's obsession with Reproduction -- first it was religion which was obsessed with it and now it is Science. Western science doesn't consider anything which doesn't reproduce to be normal or biological. For it, Reproduction is the sole function of life. (B) Another mistake that many of the answers have made on this forum, and indeed it is what the politics of "manhood" has been trying to misrepresent for centuries -- is to define the third Gender in terms of reproduction. The third Gender actually refers to an amalgamation of male and female characteristics in the same individual. It's a perfectly natural occurence and it is not only about physical characteristics. It also includes mental and emotional characteristics, and sometimes only these (as in homosexuals, who look males from outside but have feminine inner-self). Third Gender includes what in the West would be called hermaphrodites, intersexed people, transgenders and homosexuals. However, the term homosexuals actually only applies to feminine gendered males (the third gender) who like other males. And there are more feminine gendered males who like women. However the society doesn't recognise and give space to them as 'normal' beings. Masculine males who like males do not take on the 'gay' identity, and suppress their sexual need for men behind a 'heterosexual' identity (which is wrongly called 'straight' in the West. The fact is: All men naturally have a sexual need for men..
