You could put a routered edge around the sides with a roundover edge bit. That would dress it up.
If you are using hardwood flooring on steps, you can use return pieces or a stair nose with 45 degree miter cuts on the corners.

You're reading I am putting hardwood on my steps. The first step does not have a wall on either side. How do I finish around the edge of the step?
