  • Assuming you have a string of lights that needs ALL the bulbs inserted for it to work: One bulb (probably clear with a red tip) will be a special "flicker" bulb. It uses what is called a bi-metallic strip. A section of the strip moves back and forth as it heats and cools. When the light is on, it heats and is pulled back. So the circuit is broken and the light goes off, and the filiment cools. So it retracts back against the other part of the filiment, causing the light to go on again. Needless to say, when that one bulb's circuit is temporarily broken, the entire light set will go out at the same time, since they are all connected.N Electric candles sometimes use these type of bulbs.
