I'd ask a librarian to help you find a map that will show you the water flows. The only reason I know of for the mediterranean to be a 'desert' is because of escaped aquarium weed that divides by 'parthogenesis' I think, and is poisonous to most things. It is spreading very rapidly and is very hard to kill. Killing it kills everything else around it. The problem is that IT eventually crowds out or kills most things around it as well. Its a lose-lose situation that threatens all the oceans, at least to a certain water depth.

The Mediterranean Sea is not a biological desert. The Dead Sea is, because of its extraordinarily high salt concentration. Perhaps you have them confused. Support the return of the avatar: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/111472
