  • According to my MIT interviewer, who was an hour(!) late today for my interview, they are vitally important. He stressed that besides the interview and the essays, all you are to them is a piece of paper. Top-level colleges, like MIT, Brown, and Yale get thousands of perfect GPA, perfect SAT score valedictorians. What allows them to pick people is their essays. I would say that with a good essay, you can increase greatly your chances of admission. With a bad essay, there is NO chance of getting in.
  • Depends on the college and the major you pick... but let me tell you - I was a slacker even though I was pretty smart. I applied to several schools and was accepted to all but one of them. I impressed them during the interview/audition and with my essays. It's becoming more and more like this, especially with school curiculum becoming less and less standardized.
