Avoiding the entire sexual predator fiasco and considering online social networking as a concept (i.e., not just the features of MySpace itself)... I think there are good and bad aspects. For instance, just about every unsigned band I've interviewed for my zine has said something like this: "MySpace is the best thing to happen to bands in a long time." It's easy to find new bands, whether you're just a listener, another band looking to share a show, a promoter, A&R, t-shirt designer, or...a lowly teenage zine editor. I can't recall which, but I remember reading about one band who got signed after playing only about three shows in part because they had (besides good music) a large fanbase on MySpace. The networking capabilities on MySpace are huge, and just MySpace music has created a new launching pad for stardom. On the other hand, I know of a band with tons of friends on MySpace from around the world, but they can't book shows because their actual LOCAL fanbase is so weak. For me personally, it has made it easier for me to maintain friendships with people from summer camp who live far away. It is not expensive, as opposed to telephoning. I don't feel the obligation to write a lot--I just say hello to keep that relationship existent until we can actually meet up in person again. In other words, it adds to the ways we are able to communicate with each other, for whatever reason. However, at some point, these relationships can become very shallow for obvious reasons. On a less specific scale, I think parents teachers, journalists, college admissions scouts could use their time fretting about something else that is actually inherently dangerous. I think they have their pros and cons similar to anything on the Internet. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with MySpace and other social networking sites in and of themselves. It's a matter of how they're used, and the dangerous games they play with our minds in creating false connections, false identities, and false egos.

I think that they are both bad and good for society in general. Why? Well, there are many people who use each service and for different reasons. There are people who have good intentions and there are people who have bad intentions. There are people who give in too easily and there are people who know what not to post on their profile. There are people who get addicted to web sites too easily and there are people who know how to control their addiction.

I used a lot of social networking sites, but I do not know why I always can not find any friends! So very bored! Ultimately I still cancel my account!
