  • Federal welfare, yes. It devalues the dollar currency...
  • no. having 'left' home at 16 I was still at school so had to claim Income support. this is not the same as welfare (equivalent would be job seekers allowance or 'the dole!') i couldn't work to support myself so had to rely on the government. after school i had to switch to jsa (dole) whilst job searching. i would not have been able to feed myself/travel/pay bills etc without it. if you don't have family/savings how do you support yourself? too many people assume that it is only people who don't want to work that claim these benefits but it isn't. all of this was many years ago for me and because of the support i received, i managed to get through college and start a decent career instead of being stuck at maccy d's like some unlucky people! what about hard working people made redundant who are struggling to find work because of the economy/number of ex co-workers looking etc, how should they support their family while they get back on track? a better solution to people 'sponging' is to closely monitor their job seeking activities and put things in place to weed out the 'spongers'.
  • We should have compassion for people in guenuinly hard circumstances. I do believe that people who get caught cheating on welfare should have very harsh penaltys though.
  • No I don't. People need it.
  • Not completely. Many people have legitimate needs for assistance. It should be banned for those who are reasonable healthy and just choose to avoid work. Having more babies should have no part of this. In some cases sterilization may be in order.
  • well the only why you should get welfare is if you are disabled or low income and a welfare person has ruled that you are trying to get a job trust me i got in a wreck with a 21 black welfare person the fault was 50 50 but she wanted a few thousand dollars and i was like just because your pregnant doesn't mean I should give you money she also didn't have Auto Insurance and she tried to pull the my babys hurt card and when we got in a wreck she said she was okay eventually we found out that the apartment complex was trying to kick her out for not paying the rent she ended up having the sherrifs department seize her car and didn't get a dime she got what she deserved because when we talked to each other after the wreck she said she left the insurance at home what a lier
  • abolish it, no. There are some families who really do need the assistance for very good reasons. What it does need is a major overhaul.
  • Well, I think there MUST be a system in place to take care of the truly poor and those physically incapable of tkaing care of themselves; but at the same time, I think there should be HARSH penalties for those who abuse the system and there should be a method of determining if the program is succussful in helping someone climb out of poverty... But to abolish it outright? no...
  • No, if you take that money out of circulation, the current bad economy would get much worse.
  • It would be crazy to abolish welfare. WELFARE LOWERS CRIME! Go to third world countries that don't have welfare and see the crime they deal with. Places like Columbia and Somalia. Columbia is the kidnapping capital of the world. Somalia has a huge pirate problem. People in those countries don't commit those crimes because they are too lazy to work or because they are greedy. They do it out of desperation because there are no jobs to bring in money and provide for their families.
  • Yes we should abolish any form of welfare and start complete new programs that can actually work. It has to start with educating the children of this country, making sure there are jobs for them when they grow up and giving them all a safe place to live. We need to help everyone in this country who is a citizen to get work and live a productive life. The system we have now does not work. The jails are filled with it's failures. Could you imagine if we just stopped helping people? There would be total anarchy and revolution, people would have nothing to live for and then because of that think nothing of killing all who do.
  • No. I think decent human beings are compassionate and care for those less fortunate than themselves. (That rules out Republicans.) Why not let whoever wants it have welfare at a subsistence (just barely makin' it) level for as long as they want. Eventually most people will get off their butts and do something. While we're at it, if they hadn't closed all the state mental hospitals, there wouldn't be homeless people wandering around our cities sleeping on bus stop benches. If we gotta pay taxes, we might as well make our country a better place.
  • Its "helicopter money" and the only way to balance the massive inflation going on at the top. Also the only way to keep riots from breaking out.
  • this sounds like the perfect world where total Capitalism and Republicans rule!!, no poor people, help no one but your self... yeah why not, lets go all the way and just shoot the poor and the ones who need help.. that would fix it then you would not need welfare at all then would we
  • Heres an idea. IF YOU CANT AFFORD KIDS, THEN DON'T F'N HAVE THEM. People who are responsible, hardworking and single suffer because of this mentality. There should be mandatory DRUG TESTING to receive any kind of benefits... from unemployment to welfare. This would weed out 90% of those scumbags who collect. • Abolish? No. Reform it with a flog and heated pincers? Yes.
