For the best, most authentic sounding drums, you'd have to get them from their countries of origin. The only downside, besides traveling and price, is that they're hard to take care of. Most American/European drum company have started making African/Latin drums and percussion. They won't sound as perfectly authentic as the real thing, but the care for them is significantly easier (synthetic heads, metal rims/lugs (as opposed to rope-tied), plus they have a warranty. I've always preferred Remo Tunable Djembes. They come in sizes from 10" to 18", so you can get almost any sound you want. Plus, they're key tunable, with means you can change the pitch quickly and easily. They won't look as authentic, but they do have a nice, rich tone and a 'Fiberskyn' synthetic head, which is as close to real calfskin that you can get.
