Good question, there are many programs that I thought were crap that lasted a lot longer than 5 series. Some of the later episodes were great, I loved the "Smile Time" one! I always thought it was a lot better than Buffy.

Television shows that do well and continue become more and more expensive as the seasons go by, demanding higher salaries for actors, larger special effects budgets, etc. By season 5, Angel had reached 100 episodes and thus was marketable for off-network syndication (repeat airing on another network, in this case TNT). For the WB, Angel's low rating and the fact that it was already sold into syndication meant that there wasn't enough justification for continuing the series at such a high price. It sucked, since the show still had a lot of gas in it, but that's showbiz baby.
