Teens are far from stupid, but it's quite true that biologically they just aren't mature. Their brains have really not finished developing, especially areas that are responsible for impulse control or self-preservation. That's why so often teens are more likely to engage in risky behavior. So it's not so much that they aren't 'wise' enough, but really they are 'developed' enough.

They are not stupid! Just inexperienced!

I always thought I was smarter than the average teen, and when it comes down to it, I stayed out of trouble even if I didn't always do what was "expected" of me and managed through life on my own. However, as you get older (I'm 27 now) you do realize that you didn't know as much as you thought you did. I'm not in any way suggesting that you don't know it all, but as time goes by, you see that your thoughts may change

Stupid is the wrong word. Suppose you just started skiing having never been on skis before. You keep falling down. Are you stupid? Of course not! You just don't have the experience. Teens are learning something new just about every day. They make mistakes as anyone new to an experience will do, young and old alike.

Some of the most intelligent and creative AB users whom I have met on this site were teens who had wisdom beyond their years.
-
I agree, people are always saying that teens arent smart enough to understand. And they dont say their brains arent "developed" enough, they say that teens arent smart enough to understand.
-
I actually think teens are pretty smart, well at pretty clever. If they weren't smart and clever they wouldn't be able to come up with the best excuses or lies. I do think they are not wise enough for some things but for the most part, they are young ADULTS and can think for themselves.
-
it isnt that theyre stupid, its more a case of they havnt experienced enough in life, to give them enough knowledge on all sorts of things
-
but sumtimes... it seems that the teenagers know more anout their feelings and to be a teenager than their parents... who resist to remember
-
I don't think they're stupid at all. But the fact of the matter is that the older you are, the more experience you have dealing with things in life. Teens make stupid decisions sometimes is all. We were all there and did the same things and they will get older and tell a teen not to do this or that based off of their bad experiences with whatever it is, and that teen will most likely not listen either. Wash, rinse, repeat.
-
i dont generalize. so i would say it depends on the teen and not the teen in general. i know many that are stupid and many that are not stupid. most are immature though.

Old or wise enough for what?
-
I really have no idea what you are saying?

They're not stupid, but they are learning, and while you're in your teens, your body is still developing just as much. They make mistakes and dumb decisions, but it's part of life, and maybe teenagers wouldn't be so vehement towards adults if said adults would stop disapproving of every blunder they do. Besides, if teenagers are stupid, I've known more than plenty of adults who are just as stupid as those they claim superiority over. Which is worse, because they should have no excuse, since brain development is finished. Ha ha.

Most of US aren't stupid. I'm a teen and I consider myself smarter and wiser than at least 25% of adults. I can understand where they're coming from;everybody goes with the majority statistics. It's those bitchy, gangsta, and "I-wanna-fit-in-so-im-doin-drugs" kinds of teens. People just blatantly say all teens don't know anything. They shouldn't judge, but should see the differences among us.

I don't people think kids are "stupid". I'm pretty sure they aren't speaking intellectually. There are LOTS of things you simply cannot know or learn until you are much older and have more experience. Even when you are 30 you will still be very inexperienced. Think about how you learn from every experience-everyday you learn more and more about life and how the world works. So it is inevitable that the older you are the wiser you become. Some adults never wise up-that's the truth. Plus we were all kids once and that DOES give us the right to call kids stupid-because if adults look back on their teen years they usually realize how stupid they were. You will too. Believe it.

I don't think we're stupid. I have been mistaken for a grown woman (and man, sometimes) on AB. You cannot generalize anything when it comes to people, and you can't say that all teenagers are unwise or stupid, or that they're all smart and wise. Every person is different, and there will be stupid teenagers who make bad decisions, and there will be smart teenagers who are just as or more intellectual as an adult.
-
I don't. Many have lived pretty full lives by the time they are 16 or so. They are (by having NOT experienced or advised about certain things) somewhat naive about those things, but that doesn't make them stupid or dumb in any way, especially if they've learned enough to be careful.

I really depends on the individual teen. Some are quite intelligent and some have the intellect of a fence post.
