For example, you can get a 96-99 Taurus in decent condition for $1000-$2000, with almost no problems because of how fast they depreciate.

The first is what it would cost to buy a similar car without these problems and the second would be the $525 to which you would add the cost of these repairs (which depends on whether or not you can get the parts at a discount and whether or not you must pay labor or if you can do it yourself). Whichever column has the lowest figure will be telling if not conclusive. The easy way to evaluate it would be to get a mechanic to give you an estimate on the repairs. Factor in the age and mileage of the car and the liklinhood of future problems which will be major expenditures.
