Because of the type of memory a USB thumb drive is using, while the memory itself is working as designed, there is no risk of losing the data. This is because the memory doesn't need power to keep the data intact. But the key is 'while the memory itself is working'. At any time, and for many reasons, factors can render the memory unusable. I've seen USB thumb drives fail after contact with X-ray scanners at airports, after contact with high ESD discharges (static electricity), after being used in a country where voltages are different, and the fun one - for no apparent reason at all. Just like data stored on ANY media, you have to have a contingency plan. I do not have any files on any USB memory that isn't also copied somewhere else for safekeeping. You ignore basic backup principles at your peril.
