It wasn't just the E.T. game, but a number of game cartridges that Atari was disposing of in a landfill in New Mexico. The dumping is usually linked to the failure of the E.T. game.

They sure did. It was the worst selling game of all time at one point.

The reason for this was the cost to keep the games in storage when they wouldn't be sold [or sold at a huge loss] just wasn't worth it. Hence, the destruction.

Man I know nothing about this but I spent countless hours playing that Atari ET Game. I loved it. ET would fall down pits and levitate back up, or smell flowers to regenerate when he was wounded. The goal of the game was to build a phone from missing pieces so that you could eventually "phone home." I thought that game was so cool. But then again I thought most Atari games were neat, including Yars Revenge and Missile Command.
