  • Sodium Bentonite. It's a kind of clay additive. Clumping cat litter companies use it as an extremely effective clumping agent to make a 'naturally' swelling clay. When the liquid is added, bentonite swells to 15x its original size. It acts like an expandable cement, so it is not recommended that it be flushed (unless you want blocked plumbing). Vets typically do not recommend it or any other clay litter because the dust can cause breathing distress in some animals. It can also clump in between moist toes, injuries and bandages.
