To me all three George Romero films (Night of the Living Dead 1990 version, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead.) send very good messages, usually centering around human cooperation and its failings as seen in extreme situation and the human ego seen through various angles, as well as modern society mass consumption which has helped for the movies to age well, as none of that ever changed since the 70's. As for gore, the goriest one of these is probably Day of the Dead, and it also has the better looking zombies and special effects. However if you want something real nasty check out Zombie Flesh Eaters. No real message or anything remotely intelligent in that one though. XD Diary of the Dead takes a new approach for the zombie genre, and a very good one, with a message similar to Romero's style, but it's not all that gory. I think it's an awesome film though, and it has variety, something that the traditional zombie flick doesn't always have.
