It must be hard for you, I'm not sure where you stand legally, but morally I think the right thing to do is give it back.

Just give it back to him. It was in his family and not yours. Since things didn't work out between the two of you, you are no longer part of the family. Look at it this way, would you want your late great grand father's watch back? If everyone just tries to be civil, this can all be over with less anger. And if kids are involved, you both need to play nice for them.

Woman to woman.. give the ring back. It was given to you under the assumption that you two would be spending your life together.. not that he was parting with such a precious heirloom. It does not matter who has decided to call off the engagement/wedding.. He brought it.. he should take it. Play fair so that you may hold your head up.. play dirty and get what you ask for in life. Sorry to hear you are having such troubles. Good luck

Give it back, legally yours or not, it will save you a lot of grief in the end.

Yeah, I agree with the others. As hard as it is to give it up, I would give it back. Let him keep it in the family, and believe me - his side will respect you for doing that.
