It was a period of extreme nationalism, anti-American sentiment - fueled in part by disdain for Joe McCarthy and his antics - and a healthy GDP. (The GDP began to decline soon thereafter, though.) The Royal Commission on Canada’s Economic Prospects, chaired by Walter Gordon, released a report that supported this economic protectionism. This report was later attacked as being more of a product of anti-American sentiment than it was based on solid economic thinking.
