You need some kind of software (iTunes has it, as well as WinAmp and other shareware and commercial players -- I think Windows XP even has it in Media Player as native capability now) to perform "track ripping" from the CD. Despite the name, this is *not* damaging to the original CD. The software 'rips' the tracks, which are not in MP3 format, and converts them to MP3 or MP4 (for iPod) format. From there, you'd move the ripped files to your iTunes library and export them to the iPod as you do any other tracks. Painless, safe, and non-damaging to the original files / tracks.
