Unfortunately - cos I share your pain - yes. My wife is almost totally deaf and would never be able to hear the bloody phone if it did not blare out some heavy metal abomination....you should see the looks she gets sometimes when it fires off in public, cos believe me NOBODY would mistake either of us as HM afficionados....

Musical ringtones ARE annoying. Users inflict their musical preferences on everyone around them. I prefer spoken word ringtones. "Somebody's calling you!" "Hey Rip! (my name) Pick up the phone!" (My wife on video) "There's a message on my cell phone (my voice)." I reserve musical tones for alarms; the only time I use alarms are at home.

The different ringtones can serve the same purpose as caller-ID, so you will know who is calling.
