  • I certainly hope not.
  • Eventually, perhaps. It is not all that clear of a choice as some people would have you believe. Mainly, a measuring system is an intimate thing that people use on a daily basis and the people in the US have been very lazy about changing. Laziness is not the only reason, however. Having had an education heavy with math and science, I am very familiar with the metric system and I generally prefer it. The main thing it has going for it is it's consistant radix system of tens. The imperial system, on the other hand, often uses a mixed system of differant number bases (12 inches, 3 feet, 1760 yards in a mile). The metric system has basic units which are based on scientific constants. That's really all it has going for it. But the imperial system does have advantages. The basic units are of a size that are usefull for measuring everyday things. Inches and feet correspond more with household object better than meters and millimeters. Also, the imperial system is often based on numbers that are more easily divisable. With 12 units you can divide things into halves, thirds, and quarters. Not so with 10's. Look around you at real world quantities: eggs, hours, minutes, construction materials. Being able to divide things into thirds and quarters is very common and very powerful. Ultimately, our numbering system would be based on 12's. The only thing that 10 has going for it is the fact that we have 10 fingers. And who counts on their fingers anymore. There was a metric (base 10) time system in France for two years after the revolution, but it was outright rejected by the people. Compass measurments are in 360 degrees, 3 x 10 x 12. 12 months in a year provides for four equal seasons. 12. So, yeah, Americans have been stubborn and lazy to some degree. But there are other factors in play as well.
  • One certainly hopes so.
  • The metric system makes a whole lot of more sense when you think about it! Canada switched over to metric in the early 1970,s so why not the US? Europeans don,t know any other scale than metric, and I think the rest of the world thinks metric too, i think it,s about time Americans say goodbye to the imperial system that they inherited from the British. If you look at temperature for example: Water freezes at 0 degrees Celcius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) and boils at 100 degrees Celcius ( 212 degrees Fahrenheit). If you adopt the decimal system (the US currency system uses it a 100 cents to a dollar) you,ll find that the metric system is very easy. It will be however a long process to convert all units to metric, think about road signs and speedometers and odometers in vehicles, but eventually it will happen!
  • I hope so...I HATE fractions!!!
  • Not sure if it matters. We like our inches and yards. Should Europeans ever switch to US Dollars? I do prefer Celcius over Fahrenheit...
  • we'll need a president who is willing to deal with all the crap that comes from the switch. yes, metric is taught in schools and is a lot easier and more convenient, but there are way too many people out there who can't comprehend any math and would be terrified to make a switch. one country switched overnight, the US probably should switch in phases. we need to have signs up that have distances and speed limits in km and miles, and when we are comfortable that most everyone living has been schooled in metric, get rid of english units.
  • I thought it was a government mandate, supposed to happen a few years ago. What happened? Most things in grocery have both, and most road signs were in both, but have reverted back.
  • Having moved to the USA less than three years ago, after 45 years or so in England, my impression is that this won't happen until after hell freezes over.
  • No, eventually US will invade every country that DOES embrace the metric system and declare them the axis of evil until they change their systems. Economic sanctions...idk... us is crazy
  • I work on cars, motorcycles and electronics. Most of those things are metric. The thing that sucks are things like Sears mowers and GM cars and trucks that have SAE and Metric both.
  • I hope so because i always got to give the weather in F to s/o and we are C...conversion chart :)
  • we do... as an American i love the metric system... 10 base makes sense to me... 2 sets of tools for two sets of fools until some genius invents hybrid nuts that fit snug with either set and does not strip.
  • I don’t know, but I wish we would. Does anyone even know what a peck is, anymore? :-P
