  • Red sky at night, shepherds delight (sunny in the morning) Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning (rain on the way) If cows are lying down - it's going to rain Windy weather means changeable weather
  • I think that pine cones tend to close up when it is getting colder. And the rhyme I had to learn in primary school was Red Sky At Night, Shepherds' Delight. Red Sky In Morning, Shepherds' Warning. Basically, a red sky in the evening means good weather is on the way, red sky in the morning is the opposite. No idea how accurate it is but this is well known and very old so I think it must have some ring of truth. Oh yeah, and cloudless skies mean colder nights, due to the lack of insulation.
  • I've head a few times before, that if the moon has a large white glow around it, the night and following day will be really cold. I don't know how truthful this is though. To expand on the already said "If cows are lying down -- it's going to rain", I believe that the cows could also be huddled together, possibly in a corner.
  • I'd heard it this way jango - (not to discredit it but) Red sky at night - sailors delight (smooth seas) Red sky in the morning - sailors heed warning (rough waters) Weather on Good Friday - will predict weather for the next 40 days Heavy Hoar Frost - it will rain 6 months from that day (this one appears to be reliable so a farmer tells me - he plans when to cut his hay by this)
  • When arthritis pains increase and/or joints swell, stormy weather is coming. Not really sure why this is, but I think it may work similarly to barometers. A halo around the moon on a clear night indicates rain will probably fall the next day. This is usually because water particles are blowing into the area on high atmospheric elevation winds, proceeding a storm. If you see a woolly caterpillar with an exceptionally thick "woolliness" it is going to be a very cold winter. Old-wives tale, maybe, but nature usually takes care of her own, right? When seagulls are seen inland, away from the shore, there is a storm blowing in. I guess seagulls are smarter than some people, huh?
  • When the wind blows and the you can see the undersides of leaves on trees and bushes turned up rain is coming. Also, when squirrels and other little critters are running around like mad gathering food and eating until they are really fat a hard winter is coming.
