Your wife is right.
Survey the scene for safety.
Stay calm.
stay calm :)
Remain calm and level headed. Panicking will only hurt you and others around you.
your safety first, if you can't get to them, you can't help, and if you have another person down its another person needing rescued, instead of an extra person helping
Remain calm and composed, difficult but necessary!
Stay calm, or don't panic would be the obvious choice. In addition, I would say know all locations of fire exits and know the "stop, drop, and roll" principle.
stay clam and don't panic
do not panic.
Stay calm. Be Safe. Think before you act.
Don't panic
At least don't make things any worse,
Survey the scene for safety.
Come up with a plan.
Work your plan.
Medical Problems? ABC
A Airway Is he breathing? If not you had better address that problem pretty quickly
B Bleeding, might want to stop the bleeding pretty soon too.
C Circulation, always nice to have a beating heart.
Then address the other problems as the present themselves in order of degree of being critical.
Stay safe. If it ain't safe don't risk yourself- ensure your safety first; else there'd be 2 casualties instead of one.
Keep your head. This includes not freaking out and being aware of what you say. "Damn, he's f@#$ed", doesn't help. I actually heard an ambulance crew say that, so did the patient (turned out ok).
1) stay calm
2) change underwear
3) negotiate book rights
hello, the first thing you need to do,is to remain calm,if the victim sees your nervous youll get him/her more upset than they already are, explain to them him/her what youre going to do so its easy for the person to understand.
Think safety and act quickly. Then get the hell out of the situation. Have a shot afterwards.

Different situations demand different measures. But the first thing is to stay calm and safe.

Panic like crazy.
The Principles of First-Aid are generally expressed as:
Preserve life
Prevent Deterioration
Promote Recovery
Obtain appropriate qualified assistance
Everything you do should be consistent with these aims and an emergency is no exception. However one principle over-ride them all: ENSURE THERE IS NO RISK TO YOUR OWN SAFETY! Sometimes you have to be satisfied to stand back and summon emergency aid.
DO NOT MOVE THE BODY YOU COULD DAMAGE THEM FURTHER. Make sure this is accomplished then call for help/have someone immediate call for help whilst fending off sheeple trying to move the damaged body. Next.....inspect the situation. If there is an obvious remedy...something simple like removing a rope around someone's neck, then deal with it. Apply CPR as needed if you are trained. Talk to the person and tell them it will be alright help is on the way and to relax and focus. Do not let them go to sleep! Keep them awake conscience and intelligable.
Get your camera phone out.
Panic
stay calm and pray
call 911
In my situation, when I break the limbs, my first reaction - "I don't want to go to that hospital where they don't take my insurance".
I was caught by the surprise on the previous fraction occasion.
CALL 911 the rest of the sh## you can do while help is coming! The FIRST thing to do get help!
Keep yourself safe, then administer help when needed.
make sure its safe.(the surrounding, like... no nut with a machete waiting to chop you up =] )
