I was wondering this tooooooo!!!!!! That girl earlier today was freaking me out! Either it is some sort of scare tactic or else those fencing foils are sharper than we think!!!!

mostly they yell because a) theyre being poked with swords (trust me, ive been poking at my bruises all day) and b) to release all that pent up energy. i asked my fencing coach and he said they also use it for intimidation.

Probably for the same reason a weightlifter will hollar out. It's a way of releasing tension rather than restraining it inside.

I was wondering the exact same thing while i was watching that today. They yell if they get hit, if they hit the opponent, or if they win. Crazy girls
