if you allow it to flow -- it's too late. You have to pinch the tips off to keep the flowers from emerging. Once the flowers show up the basil gets bitter. Once it flowers it's finished for that year.

I'd suggest that you place a couple days' newspapers under the plant, to catch the seeds that will soon fall. Store them in a dark twist-top jar until next spring, because that plant has had a full and glorious life, thanks to you!
