Perhaps they have the feeling that they cannot achieve more? Lack of support could be a factor, also, bad outcomes early in life could cause them to believe that they are a failure.

I was kind of like that. I just sort of "assumed" I'd be a artist or teacher someday when I was younger. I'm not sure where it comes from, the other answers are good. I'm fine though, it's not sad.

I agree with the parenting problems. Parents spoil their children way to much and let them get away with everything so most children carry that perception with them growing up. I'm happy I had strict parents although it did suck at times but I can at least say I know the meaning of responsibilty!
