St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in modern USA and dates from 1565. The settlement at Botany Bay (modern Sydney) has been continuously inhabited by Europeans only since 1788. Europeans visited both Australia and USA long before those two dates, but did not manage to establish a lasting settlement until later.
