It really depends where you live as to what the costs might be. You should decide whether or not you need to incorporate. A good place to find out specific information on your state/province/country would be your local chamber of commerce

Assumeing that you live in the US: It's not all that complicated. If it's just you then a simple sole proprietorship will work. That's really all that's involved in the legal side of things. Your biggest concern should be accounting and budgeting. A copy of Quicken can help with that, or you can do it by hand in a pinch. The important thing is not to let the money slip through your fingers unaccounted for. You'll need to register your business with the local government. They can tell you what to do at city hall. This involves an application, a small fee, and probably posting a DBA (Doing Business As) notice in the paper. You'll want to set aside some money for bonding. You'll have a much easier time getting jobs if you are bonded (insured against your employees breaking or stealing stuff). Your best bet it to go to a book store and pick up one of those "Starting a Small Business" books, one specific to the state you live in. Nolo Publishing makes some great ones.

You might want to get a couple houses first. I have my own cleaning business and there is alot more to keeping your clients happy than you might think. I work by myself, but if you were to have employees I can only imagine the headache one might incur.
