That depends. They could be seriously apologizing about something but might want to qualify that there was a reason why they did what they did or that there's a limitation to what they feel sorry about. They may genuinely feel sorry. I think it depends on how they say it and whether it seems genuine or not.

it depends on what comes after the "but..."

I would think it depends on what that "but" is... Are they explaining THEIR situation? ... Why they think or said what they did? If so, then I try to see their side, and prefer to believe it's a sincere apology. Do they leave it hanging like that? Then I can see the question of sincerity there. If they go off on a tangent that has nothing to do with the apology, then yes... I can also see the question, there.

YES, anything past the "but", is how they really feel.

I don't know.......I stop listening!!!!LOL

I take it to mean that whatever came before *but*...I'll just disregard it because there are trying to justify a wrong with an excuse. Sure we all have done it but the sincerest one to me is the one that stops at.."I'm sorry". Nothing more...just I'm sorry.

It's a defense mechanism, I think. The person who says that is shifting blame to something or someone else. When someone uses the word, "but", he's saying, "I don't accept responsibility for _____________" Example: "I'm sorry, but you started it." (If you started "it", then "it" can't be my fault) The following links to a helpful and informative article called, "I'm Sorry, Butt" by Hal Edward Runkel, LMFT http://parenting.eharmony.com/2007/08/hr-sorry-butt/ Great question, Misstarrie +5 (given earlier!)

It would depend upon what follows the "but". Something like "I'm really sorry but I totally misunderstood what you were trying to tell me" works. If they say "I'm really sorry but you started it" then of course that is no apology at all. :) ((hugs)) Hapy Wednesday! :)

I think you already got excellent answers to this question. I'm sorry, but I just don't think I can help you, Misstarrie. I think you already got excellent answers to this question. I'm sorry. I just don't think I can help you, Misstarrie. Don't they just *feel* different? :-P
