What is the proper technique for using the pick for the guitar? i keep making a "echoing" noise or making the string "pop". what am i doing wrong?

Hold the pick between the thumb and outer aspect of the finger. (Tho however its comfortable for you is best) Not too tight, the pick should move a little, but not fall out. Kinda like a loose tooth that wont come out. Slight top down angle on the down stroke, and the opposite on the upstroke. Start with a lighter pick, it will have some flexibilty.

I play bass guitar, I find that because of the more flexible strings, it doesn't really matter how I hold it. But with a guitar, don't hold the pick too tightly, I found that out the hard way when i learned it. Hope this helps :D
