It is commonly thought that the bombs dropped on Japan were the first nuclear explosions, they were not, they were the second and third. The first nuclear bomb was called Trinity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_test It was a test explosion conducted by the US in New Mexico. Little Boy, and Fat Man, the bombs dropped on Japan, came not long after.
