Question

Help answer this question below.

My father recently passed away and left quite a bit of credit card debt. He did not own a house or a car. One company keeps calling me and saying I have to pay them back. He did have a 10,000 dollar life insurance policy through his job.

Unless they have a lien on his property or your Father made provisions in his will to take care of outstanding debts, it is their loss. The debt died with your Father and you should not feel obligated to pay, so enjoy your inheritance.

The life insurance is not part of your fathers estate, it is owned by the person who is the designated as beneficary.

Do not pay them a dime.

sorry it is your fathers debt, and like the above post said, the debt will die with him. it is not the moral thing to do, it would be foolish of you to get in debt to pay off your fathers bills. this is not your problem, and the creditors are IN THE WRONG for even trying to get you to pay them. bills etc etc should be taken from the estate write to the creditors informing them that they should deal with the solicitor who will deal with it, and for them to immediatley cease sending you the bills or you will report them!

They're only calling you to try to get something, anything. If they had a valid case, they'd be making it to a judge in probate court to get a cut of the estate. People like that debt collector make me sick.

You are not obligated to pay this debt! You did not sign any contract with this company, your name is no where on their agreements, therefore you are not liable!

Tell these companies your father has died and his debts are not yours. Tell them if they continue to harrass you, then you will have no choice but to contact your lawyer! End of story! They will STOP!

You should pay off his debts with the life insurance money, which is part of his estate. It’s the moral thing to do.

They should stop calling you eventually. I had a friend who had the same thing happen. She just told them her mother was deceased and ignored the calls. Unless you were on the account, I don't think they can do anything. I had my mother leave me a life insurance policy when she passed away. The put the money into an account for me immediately. I did not list this when her will was probated. The only things I listed were accounts I couldn't access without the courts permission. I was a little tricky, because I took her checking account and just paid bills with it as if she was here, till the money was gone.

I agree with the other answer! But you can also tell them to leave you alone and by law they have to. You are not responsible.
