smaller sized gravel is okay - the crabs will pick between the grains for food bits. Your fishes aren't going to spawn, so won't care about the substrate. A dark color may be better for the low-light fishes you have. Pale gravel reflects more light, making it brighter inside. The crabs would like to get out of the water sometimes, if you have a bit of driftwood or some rocks stacked to permit this. But beware they may try to go for a walk outside the tank if they have a chance! Mine did.
