  • My Nan & Grandad lived in Stockwell, South East London. Grandad was an electrician and he and one other guy were responsible for switching on the street lights each night and off again the next morning for the whole of South East London. They also looked after some sort of generator for the area and this supplied all local electricity - if neither of them showed up at work, then nobody had any electricity. My Nan didn't have a job as such as she had shit loads of kids. On my Dad's side: Grandad came from quite an affluent family that ran a furniture business. They lived in Battersea, South West London and they were Middle class. My Nan was from a working class family and was 'in service' as a scullery maid to the local gentry. They met, fell in love and married much to the anger of the rest of his family. Eventually the furniture business went bust and that was that.

My other grandmother never worked outside the home, but my grandfather was from the old country and women did not work. HA She worked harder than anyone I have ever known. My grandfather had a full breakfest on the table at 6 sharp! He came home for lunch everyday at noon and dinner was waiting at 5:15 everyday for almost 70 years. • One grandfather was an electrical engineer. That grandmother had a degree in home economics and was president the local garden club. My other grandfather was a car salesman and later had a Hertz franchise. That grandmother spent 20 years as an aide in a special ed classroom. She was halfway to an education degree (it was a two year degree then), but she had to drop out and raise her younger siblings when their mother died in childbirth. Of my greatgrandparents, I know one was a farmhand and sometime employee of the Reading Railroad. That grandmother was a SAHM and they had eight kids, six of which survived. One was in the Navy and served on the Great White Fleet. When he returned, he worked in a local factory firing and maintaining the boilers that powered the plant. That grandmother was also a housewife. The had five, all of whom survived. I don't know the other side of the family. I know one great-grandfather was a talented furniture maker as a hobby.

There was no "welfare"...but if there were, my family would not have accepted it anyway.
