Around here, they tell us the gas prices are set by the supplier. We have 2 suppliers and you can pretty much tell by the posted prices which stations are supplied by which.

Around here, 'head office' tells gas stations what price to charge. There are some chains that are always the leaders in the lowering phase and others which are leaders when the price jumps.

Station owners/managers have little discretion about what price to set.

For a profit of course. If all three gas stations are right near eachother and one gas station is lower priced the all the others.

9 times out of 10 the customers will go to the cheaper station, right?

Most gas stations won't put their prices as low as some, just because they might lose profit just aswell gain.
