  • Pure custom, as far as I know. The natural colour of circuit boards is a rather drab pale beige from the epoxy which binds the fibreglass of which the boards are made. The green colour comes from an outer protective film of solder-resist. It is probably coloured both so that you can see that it is there and because it makes the boars look better. Other colours are certainly possible. We used to have some red boards which were not be shipped under any circumstances, because they were development or test boards. And I have seen equipment with colour coded boards to go in specific slots. But green has become the default colour, and as always with such things, production will continue to use it unless someone request otherwise. It is simply easier not to change colours.
  • Green is easy on the eyes and especially if you have to work on a hardware board, over a period of time. The color green is soothing.
