What criteria on a background check is determined as a reason(s) not to hire a candidate for a position?

depends on the position, if the position has to do with money, any theft type crime would, if it has to do with kids, pretty much any crime would

It could be anything except membership in a protected class. I know of a small business that will not hire someone who is a republican. I know of another company that does not hire people who have never worked in a small business (under 100 employees). I know of another business that primarily hired recovering drug addicts and ex-cons. It completely depends on the company. Large companies may disqualify everyone with a conviction simply because they have enough qualified applicants.
