My best friend is of the opposite sex. He is 10 years older than me. We come from completely different backgrounds, but are 100% the same. He calls me his twin. We were friends for a long time before we both got married (not to each other) and we are still best friends. We were in each others weddings and out spouses are completely cool with our relationship (not sexual at all). So I think it is great. I am one of the few that believe it is possible to have true friends of the opposite sex.

A former coworker and I became very close friends while we worked together. We're both married. Shes about 11 years younger than I. Her husband and my wife were in the same Army unit at the time. We all used to go out and play pool together and go to social events. She and I exchange emails rather frequently. She's a sweetheart and I love her like a sister.

I think you can be great friends with anyone of any age, male or female, if you're on the same wavelength and speak the same language. Whether or not you or your friend has a partner is irrelevant. We're talking platonic friendship here..nothing romantic. If your romantic partner is jealous of a platonic friendship with the opposite sex, I'd dump the partner immediately..that's too controlling and indicates a need to possess you and no one owns or possesses anyone! :)
