I have heard that German can be quite beneficial in the engineering industry.

I am now retired, but not long ago I was manager of an engineering organization that dealt internationally. Certainly there is value in knowing other languages, but my advice would be to focus on learing English really well. I mean really well, to the point you can speak really well, including making quality presentations, and write really well. This will serve you better than learning other languages. Many engineers' careers suffer because they can not communicate well. You can spend a lot of energy learning Hindi, or whatever, but it probably won't do much for your career. It is rather like an engineer getting an MBA; it sounds good, but most often it does not pay off. A graduate engineering degree is more meaningful for most engineers. Believe me, I have a lot of experience!

Most any of the major European languages, like German, Italian, French. In terms of Eastern and Middle Eastern; Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic. If the Russians start getting their act together again and become leaders in technology, then Russian would be good. But I don't see that for a while.
